Winifred Elizabeth “Toby” Barnhart Harvie, of Greencastle, PA, was born June 6, 1941 on her mother’s birthday in Waynesboro, PA. She died at her home in Greencastle on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the age of 72. She was preceded in death by her mother Ada Elizabeth (Schwinger) Barnhart and her father Daniel Howard Barnhart and an infant.

She grew up in Greencastle and was a 1959 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School. Toby was one of the founders of the Keystone Band, directed by Irvin Valentine, prior to the start of band in the Greencastle schools. She graduated from Lebanon Valley College in 1963 with a BS in music education. During this time she frequently performed vocally for the VA Center in Martinsburg, WV, social organizations, churches, weddings and funerals.

She married Donald Edward Harvie on April 18, 1965. Her first teaching position was in Moorestown, NJ where she taught for two years. She continued her teaching career in Portsmouth, VA where she taught for one year. In 1967, the couple moved back to Greencastle and she taught the summer band program that year. That fall she was hired as an elementary vocal music teacher for the Greencastle-Antrim School District. Toby was a past president of the Greencastle-Antrim Elementary PTA. She started the program called Santa’s Secret Shop, where children could shop for gifts for parents and surprise them at Christmas.

She worked with the Maryland Symphony to introduce students to the instruments of the orchestra and hear the symphony in concert. This program was called Symphony Saturdays.
Toby also began the first elementary flag drill team in the area called the Blue Note Flag Team and she hand made their flags for several years. The students marched in the Memorial Day parade and performed at the Senior High Flag Show in February with assistance given to her by Mrs. Margaret Stouffer and Miss Erica Sherrill.

Toby taught 33 years in the elementary level and 7 years at the high school level in Greencastle for a total teaching career of 43 years.
Toby was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hagerstown. She also was an active member of the      Queen Esther Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #3 of Hagerstown where she held many stations and has served as secretary for 6 years. She had the privilege to serve as a Grand Officer with the Grand O.E.S. family in the state of Maryland during the 2012-2013 year. She enjoyed traveling and making friends wherever she went.

She is survived by her husband Donald, of 48 years, two sons, Christopher Robin Harvie and wife Kimberly of Laguna Hills, CA, Donovan Christian Harvie of Greencastle and one grandson Caleb Harvie.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday April 3 at 11:00 AM from the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle with Rev. David G. Rawley officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery Greencastle. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 where the   Queen Esther Order of the Easter Star Chapter #3 will hold a service at 7:30 PM.
