William John Smith, age 92, a resident of the Quincy Retirement Village and formerly of Shady Grove, PA, died Monday afternoon May 13, 2019, in Quincy Retirement Village.
Born November 20, 1926, in York Springs, PA, he was the son of the late John and Maggie (Spidel) Eichelberger.
In his younger years, Bill worked at the former Andy Gipe’s Garage in Shady Grove. He then worked for 35 years for the former Pennsylvania Railroad and Conrail. He also owned and operated Smith’s Firewood years ago. Bill was a US Navy veteran of World War II and served with the Seabees Construction Battalion #105.
Bill was a former member of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post #6319 of Greencastle, the NRA, and the Pennsylvania Snow Mobile Association. He was the original driver for the Greencastle-Antrim High School Band Bus. His hobbies and interests included hunting, working on cars, and snowmobiling.
Surviving family are one daughter, Lisa M. Timmons and husband, Richard of Greencastle; three grandchildren, Mathew Timmons (wife Chelsey) of Greencastle, PA, Michelle Peck (husband Kevin) of Mercersburg, PA, and Marc Timmons (wife Jessica) of Winchester, VA; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Romaine Conley of Lewisberry, PA; and wife, Esther (Wolfkill) Smith of Greencastle. He was preceded in death by one son, Ronnie Smith “S.F. Pinstick” in 1971, one sister and one brother.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, May 17, 2019, at 11 AM in Browns Mill Cemetery, Kauffman, PA. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 16, 2019, from 6 – 8 PM at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
