William J. Oakes, age 85 of Chambersburg, PA. and formerly a resident of Greencastle, PA. died at 4:24 P.M. Sunday, January 16, 2011 in Providence Place of Chambersburg.

Born July 13, 1925 in Van, PA., he was the son of the late Merle and Marian (Rote) Oakes.

He married Nancy (Highfield) Oakes on June 17, 1947 in Franklin, PA.. She died on October 2, 2010.

Bill was an engineer and inventor having started work at Joy Mfg. in Franklin, PA. and last worked at Worthington Pump in Taneytown, Md.

He was a member of the Antrim Brethren In Christ Church near Chambersburg where he taught Sunday School and was a member of the Berean Sunday School Class. He had served as an interim lay pastor in Huntington, West Virginia. Bill also served on the Youth For Christ Board in Greencastle.

He was a 1943 graduate of Cranberry High School and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II having served on the USS Wisconsin.

Surviving family are two daughters, Barbara L. (wife of Robert) Warren, Chemung, NY., Jan L. (wife of Jack) Warren, Webster, NY., two sons, David M. (husband of Anne) Oakes, Greencastle, PA., W. Scott (husband of Carol) Oakes, Annandale, VA., thirteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, four sisters, Louise Ziegler, North Chili, NY., Ardelle Oakes, Naples, FL., Shirley (wife of Robert) Horner, Naples, FL., and Carol (wife of Beryl) Ace, Van, PA.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother Donald Oakes.

Funeral services will be held on Friday January 21 at 2:00 P.M. from the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle, PA. with Rev. Ky R. Searcy officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Chambersburg V.F.W. Post #1599 Honor Guard will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery Greencastle. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 12:30 - 2:00 P.M. Memorial contributions may be given in his memory to the Missionary Fund at Antrim Brethren In Christ Church 24 E.
