William Max Izer
William Max Izer, age 98, a resident of Penn Hall Chambersburg, PA and formerly of Greencastle, PA died at 1:43 AM Friday, April 6, 2018 in the Chambersburg Hospital.
Born on August 1, 1919 in Shady Grove, PA, he was the son of the late Charles Ellis and Alice Lorene (Bittner) Izer. He married his wife J. Lorraine (Gordon) Izer in December 1942. She died on October 24, 1994.
Max was a 1936 graduate of Greencastle High School and attended Gettysburg College. He served his apprenticeship at Landis Tool Company of Waynesboro and retired in 1983 after 41 years of service as supervisor of industrial engineering. Max was a World War II veteran having served in the US Army in the South Pacific Theatre and in Okinawa and was honorably discharged as a 1 st Lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corps.
He was a lifelong member of the Grace United Church of Christ in Greencastle where he served as an elder, deacon and church treasurer. Max also attended chapel at Penn Hall where he served as an usher. Max was a charter member (72 years) and life member of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post #6319 of Greencastle. He also was a past commander, served as quartermaster for many years and served on the board of directors. Max was recognized with the Legion of Honor membership in the Chapel of the Four Chaplains.
Max also was a life member of the Greencastle Sportsman Association, member of the Chambersburg American Legion Post #46, past president of the Greencastle Senior Citizens and was a founding member of the Franklin Learning Center.
He was a member for over 70 years and a Past Worshipful Master of the Mount Pisgah Lodge F. & A.M. #443 of Greencastle. He also had been a member of the: Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of the Valley of Harrisburg, South Penn Scottish Rite Club, George Washington Council #66, George Washington Royal Arch Chapter #76, Continental Commandery #56, all of Chambersburg. He also was a member of the Valley Forrest #145 Tall Cedars of Lebanon, PA and a member of the Shippensburg Scottish Rite Club.
Surviving family are numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son Jack G. Izer in 2011, infant son William Max Izer Jr. in 1946 and a sister Betty Jane (Izer) Schmidt.
A viewing for family and friends will be held on Tuesday April 10 from 9:30 – 11:00 AM at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle. A masonic service will follow at 11:00 AM on Tuesday. A funeral service will begin at 11:30 AM on Tuesday April 10 at the funeral home with Chaplain Brenda Doyle officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday April 10 at the Chapel of Penn Hall 1475 Philadelphia Ave. Chambersburg with Chaplain Brenda Doyle officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in his memory to the Grace United Church of Christ 128 East Baltimore St. Greencastle, PA 17225 or to the Cedar Hill Cemetery P.O.
