William H. Benson

William H. Benson, age 89 of Ridge Road Waynesboro, PA died at 3:15 PM Saturday, January 11, 2014 in the Quincy Retirement Home where he was a resident for the past month.

Born April 22, 1924 in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of the late William H. and Mabel (Grimm) Benson. His wife Elsie L. (Bullington) Benson died on August 20, 2003.

He had worked as a Baltimore City Police Officer and retired from the State of Maryland working as an investigator with the Public Defender’s Office. Bill was a US Navy veteran of World War II having served on the USS Buck which sank off the coast of Italy by a German submarine and he also served on the USS Evans.

Bill was a member of the Ebenezer “Guitners” United Brethren Church of Greencastle. He was a life member and past commander of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post #6319 of Greencastle and was also a past District VFW Commander.

Surviving family are two sons John S. Benson of Greencastle, Byron James Johnson of Severna Park, MD, one daughter Kathy L. Boone of Kearneysville, West Virginia, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by a son Harold Wayne Johnson in 2007.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday January 16 at 11:00 AM from the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle with Pastor David Grove officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Chambersburg VFW Post #1599 Honor Guard will be in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service on Thursday. The Greencastle VFW will conduct a brief memorial service at 11:00 AM Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society Franklin County Unit 384 Floral Ave. Chambersburg, PA 17201.
