Wilbur E. "Wib" Bear, age 83 of 161 East Franklin St. Greencastle, Pa. died at 4:40 A.M. Sunday, October 5, 2008 in the Chambersburg Hospital.
Born March 17, 1925 in Greencastle, Pa., he was the son of the late Norman R. and Mary Katherine (Pike) Bear.
He retired in 1980 as a Greencastle mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. In his earlier years he had worked at Letterkenny Army Depot and the former Barkdoll''s Quality Market of Greencastle.
Mr. Bear was a member of the Otterbein United Brethren church of Greencastle where he served on the Board of Administration for 9 years, member of the Crusaders Sunday School Class and was a former choir member.
He was a post member of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post #6319 of Greencastle and was a member and former director of the Moss Spring Swim Club of Greencastle.
Mr. Bear was one of the original founders of the Greencastle Little League. He also played and managed the Greencastle Athletics baseball team and the Kauffman Station team.
He was an avid supporter of Greencastle-Antrim School District athletics. Wib enjoyed walking around Greencastle, sitting on his front porch and greeting passersby and swimming at Moss Spring.
He was a 1943 graduate of Greencastle High School and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II having served in the South Pacific theatre.
He and his wife Gladys I. (Gelwicks) Bear were married July 2, 1948 in Hagerstown. She died on October 15, 2004.
Surviving family are:
One daughter, Saundra F. Bear of Greencastle and one son James A. Bear of Sandusky , Ohio., four grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother Robert Bear, sister Norma Jean Miller and a half brother Daniel Pike.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday morning at 10:30 A.M. from the Otterbein United Brethren Church 146 Leitersburg St. Greencastle with the Rev. David G. Rawley officiating. Burial will be in the Upton Church of The Brethren Cemetery near Upton, Pa. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6 - 8 P.M. at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle and at the church one hour before the service on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in his memory to the building fund of Otterbein United Brethren Church 146 Leitersburg St. Greencastle, Pa. 17225.
