Wanita M. Gelsinger age 80, of Greencastle, PA, passed away after a brief but courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at her home surrounded by her family. Born June 28, 1941, in Hagerstown, MD, she was the daughter of the late Edward L. and Catherine E. Harris Schildtknecht.
Mrs. Gelsinger worked as a seamstress and presser at the former Stanley Company in Chambersburg, PA for 37 years, retiring in 1997.She was a member of Mt. Tabor Brethren in Christ Church, where she taught children’s Sunday School for over 25 years. She enjoyed quilting, crafting, sewing, gardening, but most of all she cherished time playing with her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. Christmas at her home, surrounded by her family was her most joyous time of the year. Wanita was a beacon of light and love for her family and friends, she will be forever missed.
Surviving is her husband of 64 years, Melvin J. Gelsinger, whom she married on September 14, 1957, in Greencastle; three children, Melvin E. Gelsinger (wife Joyce) of St. Thomas, PA, Kathy A. Souders (husband Mark) of Greencastle, PA, and Scott E. Gelsinger (wife Kerry) of Greencastle, PA; ten grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; three siblings, Doris Jenkins (the late Jack), Lois Potter (the late Bill), and Donna Houser (Buck) all of Hagerstown, MD; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson and brother in infancy and two brothers, Leon Schildtknecht and Wayne Spigler.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 7, 2022, at 1 PM at Mt. Tabor Brethren in Christ Church, 12080 Punch Bowl Rd., Mercersburg, PA 17236, where Pastor Kevin Lay will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the above church and address. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Inc., Greencastle, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
