Walter Raymond “Ray” McElhaney, Jr. age 71, of Lake City, FL and formerly of Mercersburg, PA, passed away on February 10, 2025, at Lake City Hospice Haven, Florida. Born in Hagerstown, MD on January 31, 1954, he was the son of the late Walter Raymond McElhaney, Sr. and Edna Allura Mae Gearhart McElhaney.
A 1971 graduate of the James Buchanan High School, he went on to serve honorably in the USAF from 1972-1976; where his duty included a tour in Thailand. Mr. McElhaney then continued his service working at Letterkenny Army Depot as a Calibration Technician dedicating 30 years of service before retiring in 2003. Mr. McElhaney enjoyed playing sports, especially soccer and softball and also enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a life member of the VFW and longtime member of the American Legion.
Mr. McElhaney was the last of his immediate family, survived only by his extended family to include a nephew, Colin Romberger (wife Meghan), brother in law, Charles Romberger, three great nieces, Madison, Sophie, and Ada, and two great nephews, Connor and Max. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Norma K. Romberger in March 2022.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, March 14, 2025, at 1 PM in the Methodist Church Cemetery, Hustontown, PA, where Pastor Warren Heintzelman will officiate. Arrangements are entrusted to the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Inc., Greencastle, PA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the charity of one’s choice.
