Virginia May (Sarvis) Moyer, 74, of Hagerstown, MD passed away at home on Wednesday, September 22, 2021. Virginia was born in Chambersburg, PA on September 6, 1947, to the late Albert and Elsie (Ramer) Sarvis.
She grew up on Guilford Springs Rd. and graduated from Chambersburg Area Senior High School. Virginia leaves behind a remarkable legacy of caring for those with special needs, having served at Marshall Street School as a substitute teacher for about 20 years. Her selfless devotion to her son and people like him is a living example of her deep faith in Jesus Christ. In 2016, Virginia was diagnosed with breast cancer, and in 2019, the cancer metastasized to her lungs and bones. To Virginia, work was fun, and despite a years-long cancer battle, she never gave up her interests in gardening, mowing, and weedwacking until close to the very end. We can just picture her sweeping up around her cabin in heaven! She was an avid yardsaler, and was still going out every Friday until mid-August 2021. She also enjoyed puzzling, reading, playing tunes on the piano by ear, watching hummingbirds, and having the family over for meals. Virginia was a member of Pleasant View Mennonite Church.
She leaves behind her husband of nearly 55 years, Earl Moyer; three children, Wanda (Moyer) Vaughn and husband, John; Earl Moyer and wife, Tina; and Lynnwood Moyer; and three grandchildren, Austin Vaughn and wife, Kourteney; Dakota Vaughn; and Mia Moyer. Lynnwood Moyer, profoundly handicapped from infancy, was devotedly cared for at home by Virginia every day for over 49 years. Less than a month before her passing, she turned his care over to HDC (Human Development Council). She is also survived by two brothers, Carl Sarvis and wife, Sue Ann and Glen Sarvis and wife, Lois; and a sister, Ruth (Sarvis) Thomas and husband, Paul. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Pearl (Sarvis) Lehman and Jean (Sarvis) Pichiyá.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 27, 2021, at 11 AM at Pleasant View Mennonite Church, 346 Warm Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA, where Rev. Harold Yeager will officiate. The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 26, 2021, from 6 – 9 PM at the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Inc., 45 South Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA and on Monday at the above church and address one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the adjacent church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave. Hagerstown, MD 21742.
