Violet (Shank) Burkholder
Violet (Shank) Burkholder, age 93 of Menno Haven Chambersburg, Pa. and formerly of Maugansville, Md. went to be with the Lord Friday, January 16, 2009.
Born December 19, 1915 in Greencastle, Pa. she was the daughter of the late Aaron and Ida (Grove) Shank.
She was united in marriage to John Eber Burkholder on August 11, 1936. They enjoyed 72 years of life together.
She was a member of the Salem Ridge Mennonite Church of Greencastle, Pa. where she served her congregation in various capacities.
Her love and generosity were often demonstrated through gifts of food, including donating hundreds of pies which helped raise thousands of dollars for worthy causes. She was well known for her ground cherry pie.
As a teenage seamstress, she worked for the former Stanley Co. of Chambersburg, Pa. She remembered sewing a jacket for the famous boxer, Joe Louis. Later in life, she enjoyed making quilts for family members as well as donating quilts and various other items to charitable organizations.
She and her husband worked together for over 25 years building their business, Burkholder''s Floor Covering of Hagerstown, Md. After retirement, they traveled together to many parts of the world on mission trips responding to human needs.
Surviving family in addition to her husband are: one son, Marlin (Husband of Charlotte Heatwole) Burkholder of Harrisonburg, Va., two daughters, Jean Burkholder (Wife of Ken Peifer) Hagerstown, Md., Joyce Burkholder, Lancaster, Pa., one sister, Ida Frey, Charlottesville, Va., six grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant son , three brothers and one sister.
The family will receive friends this evening from 6-8 P.M. at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle, Pa.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday January 20 at 11:00 A.M. at Salem Ridge Mennonite Church, 441 Pensinger Rd. Greencastle, Pa. Rev. Galen Lehman and Chaplain Vernon Isner will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
