Vernon C. Widder, 89, passed away on Monday, March 28, 2016 at Menno Haven Nursing Center, Chambersburg, PA. Born October 29, 1926 at his grandparents home in Kauffman Station (Chambersburg) PA, he was the son of the late George Howard “Dutch” and Mary (Atherton) Widder. He married Cornelia G. “Connie” (Hoffeditz) Widder on August 18, 1945 in Hagerstown, MD on a weekend leave from Merchant Marine School in Sheepshead Bay, New York.
After a short stint with the Merchant Marines, he worked first with his father as an electrician, and was then employed by the Army Civil Service at Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg, Site A in Greencastle, Site B in Sharpsburg, MD and finally at Ft. Ritchie, MD.
After retirement in 1985, he and his wife visited their daughter in Germany and toured Europe for 3 months. Vernon was a member of Heidelberg Church of Marion, PA and a charter member of the Kauffman Ruritan Club and Community Center from 1957 until his death. He was a member of NARFE, a 1945 graduate of Greencastle High School and later in his life he received an associate degree from Penn State University.
Vernon is survived by his wife Connie of the Menno Haven Nursing Center, three children, Lucinda Custer and John C. Widder both of Chambersburg and Roy L. Widder of Waynesboro, six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Janet Carol Sipes.
There will be a viewing on Tuesday evening April 5 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle with funeral services on Wednesday morning April 6 at 10:30 AM at the funeral home with Rev. David Riley officiating. Interment will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery Greencastle. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Heidelberg Church, 166 Colorado St. P. O. Box 381 Marion, PA 17235.
