Shirley M. Dunkle, age 88 of Greencastle, Pennsylvania passed away the morning of Saturday, May 5, 2018, entering into the eternal rest of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Born January 15, 1930 in Altoona, PA, she was last surviving child of the late Walter F. Ross and Violet (McMullen) Ross. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death two months ago by her husband of 68 years, Wayd E. Dunkle; three brothers, Richard R. Ross of Altoona, Gene G. Ross of Altoona, Russell M. Ross of Ashley PA; two sisters, Beatrice M. Finney of Charlotte, Michigan and Gloria G. Jackson of Altoona; and one great grandchild, Augustine Ross Titus.
She is survived by three sons, Robert W. Dunkle (wife Saundra) of Greencastle, Rev. Jeffrey L. Dunkle (wife Ruth) of Manheim, Craig E. Dunkle (wife Heidi) of Greencastle; eight grandchildren, Brandon, Ross, Justin, Timothy, David, Rachel (Gehman), Matthew, and Faith (Titus); seven great grandchildren, Ian, Felicity and Wesley Dunkle; Zackery and Zoey Gehman; Brooklynn Dunkle; Adelaide Titus; and 17 nephews and nieces.
She attended Altoona High School and was employed at Boyer's Candy Company and Brownie's Potato Chips in Altoona and Corning Glass Works in Greencastle. She was a homemaker, a member of Mack Golden Bulldogs of Hagerstown MD and the Greencastle Senior Citizens Center where she assisted with meal preparation.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, flowers and word puzzles. In earlier years she had undergone two heart surgeries and survived breast cancer.
She was a long-time member of the former Grace Brethren Church, Hagerstown MD and in later years attended Grace Bible Church, Greencastle PA.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 9 at 11:30 am at the Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, 45 South Carlisle Street, Greencastle PA, with Pastors Jeffrey L. Dunkle and Larry W. Finney officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home starting at 10:00 am Wednesday. Interment will be at Beautiful View Cemetery near State Line PA.
