Russell H. “Russ” Clever, age 78 of Greencastle, PA died unexpectedly at 10:49 PM Saturday, November 23, 2013 in the emergency room of the Waynesboro Hospital. Born August 25, 1935 in Hagerstown, Maryland, he was the son of the late Edward R. and Pearl J. (Provard) Clever. Russ married Doris M. “Dody” (Ickes) Clever on January 9, 1960. He worked for the Columbia Gas Co. Greencastle office for 18 years, owned the Carvel Ice Cream franchise in the South Gate Mall Chambersburg for ten years and last worked as an inside counter sales manager for Johnnie’s Hotel and Restaurant Supply of Chambersburg retiring in 1997. Russ was a life member of the Rescue Hose Co. #1 where he served on the Hobo Minstrel Show as director and one of the two premier end men. He and his wife were both heavily involved with Greencastle Old Home Week for over 30 years with Russ co-chairing the unofficial opening on the square on Sunday night, served as a pageant scene director and actor in other scenes, helped with the bike race and umpiring of the Old Timers baseball game. Russ’s main hobby and interest was his musical comedy group “Two Nuts & A Bolt” where he enjoyed making people laugh. He and his wife received the James P. Oliver Outstanding Citizenship Award from the Greencastle-Antrim Chamber of Commerce in 2009. Russ and Dody served as a belsnicklers for the Greencastle Heritage Christmas, he served as grand marshal for the children’s Fourth of July parade at Tayamentasachta, served with the American Cancer Society’s Greencastle Relay For Life and the Duck Derby. He was one of the six founders of the Greencastle Little League in 1955 and later was a coach in the Little League, Pony League and for the American Legion team. Russ was a veteran of the U.S. Army, life member of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post #6319, member of the Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post #373, both of Greencastle, member of the FOE and Owls Club, both of Waynesboro. Russ was a 1954 graduate of Greencastle High School and he attended the Trinity Lutheran Church of Greencastle. He enjoyed actively contributing to his community and his advice to everyone was laughter keeps you healthy. Surviving family in addition to his wife Dody are one son Alfred “Huck” Monn of Chambersburg, one daughter Deborah I. Librandi of Harrisburg, PA, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers Roy, Charles and Earl Clever. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday November 27 at 1:00 PM from the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle with Rev. William DeHass officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Chambersburg VFW Post #1599 Honor Guard will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery Greencastle. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6 – 8 PM. The funeral home will be open after 3:00 PM for the convenience of friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Rescue Hose Co. Minstrel Show 842 South Washington St. Greencastle, PA 17225.
