Robert D. Witmer, Sr.

Robert D. Witmer, Sr., age 82, of Chambersburg, PA passed away on Saturday, June 25, 2022, at the Chambersburg Hospital surrounded by family.  Born November 21, 1939, in Shady Grove, PA, he was the son of the late Clarence and Mary Lindsay Witmer, Sr.

A U.S. Army Veteran, Mr. Witmer served honorably from 1958-1960. He was later employed as a machine operator at the former Mack Truck in Hagerstown, MD from 1969 until his retirement in 2002. Mr. Witmer was a member of the American Legion Post 373, Greencastle Sportsman’s Association, and Rescue Hose Company 1 all of Greencastle, PA.  An avid outdoorsman, Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping, but he was passionate about baseball and the L.A. Dodgers. He also enjoyed playing cards and going for a Sunday drive.

Surviving are 6 children, Robert D. Witmer, Jr. of Mercersburg, PA, Wynne W. Witmer (wife Tina) of Chambersburg, PA, Mary Esther Kline (husband Gene) of Hagerstown, MD, Sanford K. Witmer (wife Donna) of Chambersburg, PA, Paul D. Witmer (wife Brenda) of Greencastle, PA, and Philip L. Witmer (wife Pam) of Greencastle, PA; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 5 siblings, Clarence Witmer, Jr. (wife Esther) of Greencastle, PA, Lowell Witmer (wife Clara) of Greencastle, PA, Glen Witmer (wife Shelby ) of Marion, PA, Mary Gsell (husband Paul) of Shippensburg, PA, and Henry Witmer (wife Noy) of Melbourne, FL.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Mary Joann Shipley Witmer ,  three siblings, Leonard Witmer, Sr., Richard Witmer, and Joan Young and a daughter in law, Brenda Witmer.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 1, 2022, at 11 AM in the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Inc., 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA, where Pastor Nelson Witmer will officiate. The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 30, 2022, from 6 – 9 PM and one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Interment will follow the service in Shanks Church Cemetery.
