Mr. Richard Coyle "Red" Wingerd, 87, of Greencastle, died Friday morning, August 16, 2013, at Waynesboro Hospital. He was the husband of Mrs. Anna Mary Katherine Duffey Wingerd, his wife of 53 years.

Born October 11, 1925, in Fayetteville, he was a son of the late Simon C. and Della Wagner Wingerd. He was a veteran of the United States Army and a Bronze Star and Purple Heart Recipient.

Red owned and operated a poultry business in Greencastle in his early years. Later he worked for Hoch''s Arco Station, also of Greencastle; and retired finally from J. Schoneneman, Inc. Chambersburg.

He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Greencastle. Additionally he was a member of the American Legion, Frank L. Carbaugh Post 373, Greencastle Sportsman''s Club and the NRA. He was also a life member of Rescue Hose Company #1, Greencastle.

He was an outdoorsman at heart who enjoyed hunting and fishing, looking for morelle mushrooms, and looking for and collecting arrowheads.

Surviving besides his wife are his children, Phyllis J. Rienks of Chambersburg, James A. Duffey and wife Kathie of Clear Spring, Dennis L. Duffey of Greencastle, and Kenneth E. Duffey of Florida; grandchildren Angela, Jessie, Amy and Kim; as well as eight great grandchildren. He was the last of his immediate family.

Besides his parents, Red was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis Barrick Wingerd, who died in 1957; as well as four brothers.

The family will receive friends at Harold M. Zimmerman & Son Funeral Home, 45 South Carlisle Street, Greencastle, on Tuesday, August 20, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, August 21, 10:00 AM, at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle. Rev. Ron L. Cook will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Wingerd''s name may be made to the American Cancer Society Chapter of your choice.
