Richard Lee "Dick" Robinson, age 83 of 15483 Pennsylvania Ave. State Line, Pa. died at 11:40 A.M. Sunday April 11, 2010 in the Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Chambersburg where he was a guest since February 28, 2008.
He was born June 25, 1926 in Greencastle, Pa., and was the last son born to Howard and Margaret (Hartman) Robinson.
He and his wife of 58 years Gladys Clara (Byers) were married December 24, 1951 in State Line, Pa.
He attended 11 years of school in Greencastle and was given his high school diploma on June 27, 2008 while at Falling Spring. The Pennsylvania State Legislation passed "Operation Recognition" a law mandating diplomas be granted to veterans who left high school to serve in the military between 1940 -46.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944 serving three years in the South pacific on a Survey ship the U.S.S. Bowditch, where he witnessed the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll during Operation Crossroads in 1946.
Upon his discharge from the Navy as Motor Machinist 2nd Class at Norfolk, VA, he received the Good Conduct Medal, The American Area Medal, The Asiatic Pacific Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
He worked at Hick''s Garage, Greencastle, the New York Central Iron Works and the Pennsylvania Railway both of Hagerstown. He retired from the former A.G. Crunkleton Electric Co. in 1990 and later drove delivery trucks for Caleb Martin of Hagerstown and E.L.M. Garage of Greencastle.
He and his wife enjoyed traveling and was fortunate to have been able to visit 47 states, Alaska, The Yukon and many Canadian Provinces. He also enjoyed taking are of his lawn and shrubbery.
Dick was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, Ralph S. Tagg Jr. Chapter #14 Washington County MD., member of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post #6319 , Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post #373, and The Atomic Veterans Association all of Greencastle. He was a member of the National A.A.R.P. and a former member of the State Line Ruritan Association.
Mr. Robinson was a member of the Trinity United Church Of Christ State Line since 1990 and a former 39 year member of the Trinity United Brethren Church of State Line, Pa.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sisters Virginia (Seacrest) Glass, Chambersburg, Phyllis Ellzey, Marion, Pa., and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Glenn Robinson who died November 12, 1981.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday April 15 at 10:30 A.M. from the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle with Rev. Dr. Edwin Higginbottom officiating. Burial with military honors by the Chambersburg V.F.W. Post #1599 will be in the Beautiful View Cemetery, Middleburg, Md. There will be no viewing but the family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 9:00 - 10:30 A.M.
