Mr. Richard Lee "Dick" Hartle, 90, of Hagerstown, died late Monday afternoon, April 9, 2012, at Meritus Medical Center, Hagerstown. He was the husband of Mrs. Myrtle Louise Leckron Hartle, whom he married on July 30, 1948.
Born in August 7, 1921, in Middleburg, Washington County, he was the youngest of eleven children of Stanley Wade and Eleanor Elizabeth Nellie Barnhart Hartle.
He was a World War II Army Air Force Veteran; and attended the University of Maryland under the GI Bill of Education.
Prior to enlisting with the military and periodically after college, Mr. Hartle worked for Fairchild Industries, Hagerstown, where he served upon his final departure as a Senior Flight Test Engineer. Some of the testing he conducted was applied to NASA''s Skylab Program.
During a period of being laid off from Fairchild, he was employed with Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.
Finally leaving Fairchild in 1972, he was employed for Grove Manufacturing Company, Shady Grove until retirement in 1984.
Dick was formerly a member of Trinity United Church of Christ of State Line where he served as Deacon, Church Elder, and Vice-President and Treasurer of the Church Consistory; and more recently member of First Christian Disciples of Christ, Hagerstown.
As a Mason, he was a member of Mt. Pisgah Lodge, No. 443, F&AM of Greencastle, Washington Royal Arch Chapter No. 176 of Chambersburg, #56 Knights Templar of Chambersburg, Valley of Harrisburg Lodge, Council, Chapter, and Consistory of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite.
He was also a charter member and co-organizer of the Middleburg/Mason-Dixon Historical Society, which was formed in 1996; member of State Line Ruritan Club where he served as a Secretary, Vice President, and President; the Grove Management Club and Grove Retirement Club, and National AARP.
Mr. Hartle is survived by his sons, Barry Lynn Hartle and wife Kathy of Greencastle, Dan Lee Hartle, Alexander Ted Hertel, and Roland Leo Hartle , all of Hagerstown; grandchildren, Jeffrey D. Hartle and Tracy L. Hartle Pipkin; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by in death by siblings Ruth Myers, Yvonne Metcalf, Gertrude Collison, Ariella Leister, Beatrice Bonebrake, Rhae Barnhart, and Leroy, Stanley Cecil and Elias Hartle.
The Harold M. Zimmerman & Son Funeral Home, Greencastle, is handling the arrangements. There will not be calling at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held Wednesday afternoon, April 11, at 2:00 PM, in Beautiful View Cemetery, Middleburg/State Line. The Rev. Dr. John A. Toms of St. Paul''s Reformed Church, Clear Spring, will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul''s Reformed Church 14234 National Pike, Clear Spring, MD 21722.
