Richard L. "Dick" Baumgardner Sr.

April 5, 1923 — June 29, 2015

Richard “Dick” Leon Baumgardner, Sr. (better known to family as Senior or Bummy), age 92 of Greencastle, PA passed away Monday, June 29, 2015 at the Waynesboro Hospital  surrounded by his loving family.
Born April 5, 1923 in Waynesboro, PA, he was the son of the late Raymond W. and Mary Elva (Miller) Baumgardner. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Marcia Hart Baumgardner.
Richard met his future wife Marcia Hart during a camping adventure with a buddy at the age of 15.  Pitching a tent on a path along the Potomac River maintained by the Hart family, Richard was run off the land by Marcia’s older brothers.  He often quipped “the only way I could get even with them was to marry their sister,” which he eventually did on February 13, 1942 during his military service in the Second World War.
As an airman in the US Army Air Corps, Richard was a decorated soldier and served as a radio operator and tail gunner on a B25 medium bomber in the South Pacific Theatre. He reached the rank of Staff Sergeant and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and the Good Conduct Medal, along with a Bronze Star Distinguished Unit Badge. Richard participated in over 50 bombing missions against Japanese installations and naval vessels
Upon his honorable discharge from the Army in September 1945, Richard and Marcia settled in Greencastle, PA. They lived on South Washington Street, where they lived for 54 years where they raised their five children.
Richard and Marcia traveled extensively in the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean. They enjoyed boating on the Potomac River, the Chesapeake Bay, and took many boating trips all over the NE United States.
Richard was a successful businessman. In his younger years, along with his brother Ray, he operated the former Baumgardner Café and Restaurant in Greencastle. He then started G. Keith Constructors. In his 36 years as a builder and developer he oversaw many notable projects in PA to include Sheffield Manor in Waynesboro and the Greencastle post office. He also had several projects and housing developments across Virginia and West Virginia.
Richard was a “Member and Past President” of the Pennsylvania Builders Association, the Franklin County Builders Association, and the Greencastle Rotary Club. Richard was also a member, of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Greencastle, the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post #6319, the Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post #373, and the Waynesboro Country Club. He was a 1941 graduate of Greencastle High School.
As legacies go, Richard’s is as American as it gets. He was an outstanding soldier, successful entrepreneur, loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. While he took great pride in his professional life, his true joy resided with his family.
Surviving family in addition to his wife are his daughter Deborah Johnston and husband Craig of Fairfield, PA, three sons, Richard L. Baumgardner Jr. and wife Carla of Tyrone, PA, Terry Lynn Baumgardner and wife Kathy of Clarks Green, PA, Dennis Baumgardner and wife Nanette of Wenonah NJ, 8 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
