Reverend Donald E. Reese
The Reverend Donald Eugene Reese, 87, of Mercersburg, PA., died Thursday, October 16, 2014 in Shippensburg, PA., after an extended illness. He was born July 5, 1927 in Boonsboro, MD., the son of the late James Raymond Reese and Emma Marie (Foreman) Reese. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Janet L. (Stouffer) Reese.
He was a 1945 graduate of Boonsboro High School in Boonsboro, Maryland. He was a graduate of Phillips University and of Phillips Theological Seminary, Enid, Oklahoma, where he received his Masters of Divinity in 1952.
An ordained minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Rev. Reese served pastorates in Oklahoma, Kansas, Virginia, Washington D.C., West Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. He also held association standing in The United Church of Christ and recently was recognized on the 65th anniversary of his ordination.
He has held several regional and national offices in the Christian Church organization and served in many denominational capacities, including, budget director and finance chairman for the Regional Church. He also served as vice moderator, consultant to congregations in transition, chairman of funds for assistance to congregations, a member of the board of directors, consultant in the establishment of new churches and chairman of youth revivals and youth work.
In addition to his wife, Rev. Reese is survived by his sisters, Shirley A. Motz and husband, Gilson, of Waynesboro, PA; Nancy L. Taylor of Pittsburgh, PA.; M. Rebecca Higman and husband, Robert, of Boonsboro, MD; daughters Dona J. Reese and husband, Henry Hexmoor, of Carbondale, IL; Paula F. Kurrus and husband, Robert, of Cockeysville, MD; and Claudia H. Reese of Ithaca, NY; step-daughter, Lorena D. Frantz and husband, John, of Hagerstown, MD; son, John C. Reese and wife, Carol, of Clarksburg, MD.
He is also survived by grandchildren, Christopher P. Hexmoor, Bethany H. Adler and husband, Brian E., Jesse Kurrus, Carolyn J. Reese, James B. Reese, Rudy A. Widger, Evan S. Frantz and great grand-daughter Ariana R. Adler and numerous, dearly beloved, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Rev. James R. Reese, his sisters Catherine M. Newcomer and Joann E. Lum.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 1:00 P.M. at Beaver Creek Christian Church, (Disciples of Christ), 9711 Beaver Creek Church Rd. Hagerstown, MD with the Rev. Mark Curran officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Donald E. Reese Endowment/Honorary Fund, Phillips Theological Seminary, 901 N. Mingo Rd. Tulsa, OK. 74116-5612.
