Retha Ellen (Witmer) Keener

Retha Ellen (Witmer) Keener, age 94 of Cearfoss, MD died peacefully at home surrounded by her children Thursday evening July 29, 2021. Born March 18, 1927, in Greencastle, PA she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Mary (Diller) Witmer.

Retha is preceded in death by her loving husband, Nathan P. Keener in 2012 and her son, Steven P. Keener in 2020. She is survived by four children, N. Larry Keener and his wife Cathy, Kathy Keener Lamb and her husband Greg, Faye Keener, Detra Keener Marshall and her husband Tim. Retha also has five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Richard and Raymond Witmer.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

She was a member of the Cedar Grove Mennonite Church of Greencastle. She was one of the first female school bus drivers in the country and was beloved by all those who rode her bus for the thirty plus years she drove for Washington County Maryland.

She served as a 4-H leader and was an active member of the Maugansville Ruritanettes and the Crazy Eights. She enjoyed spending time with her family, attending Southern Gospel concerts, camping and traveling. She was a kind, tender soul who always had a smile on her face.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 5, 2021, at 10 AM from the Cedar Grove Mennonite Church 13343 Williamsport Pike Greencastle. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 4, 2021, from 6 - 8 P.M at the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle and at the church one hour before the service on Thursday.
