Ralph M. Walck
Ralph M. Walck, age 86 of Edward Dr. Greencastle, PA and a resident of ManorCare Health Services of Chambersburg for nearly two years, died at 11:55 A.M. Friday, January 11, 2013 in the Chambersburg Hospital.
Born November 19, 1926 in Greencastle, PA, he was the son of the late David Ralph and Ruth (Stoops) Walck. He married Bernice L. (Mentzer) Walck on September 5, 1945.
He worked as an electrician, first working for the former J.J. Alleman Electric Co. of Greencastle, then he worked for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local #307 of Cumberland, MD and then last worked and retired from Mack Truck of Hagerstown.
Ralph served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was aboard the USS Fechteler DE 157 when it was sunk by a German sub. He was a 1944 graduate of Greencastle High School and was a member of the Greencastle Presbyterian Church where he served on the Board of Trustees.
He was a life member of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post # 6319 where he had served as V.F.W. Club President and was also a member of the Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post #373 both of Greencastle. Ralph also was a member of the UAW Local #171 of Hagerstown, served on the Jerome King Playground Board of Directors and was a member of the Greencastle Athletic Association. He coached baseball in the Little League with the Dodgers and also coached in the Pony League. He was an avid New York Yankees and Green Bay Packers fan.
Surviving family in addition to his wife are one daughter Kathleen Sharon (husband Larry) Williams, Greencastle, one son Timothy Ralph (wife Lisa) Walck, Greencastle, five grandchildren, Wendy Bowen, Stephanie Myers, Tara Williams. Sean Walck, Shayla Walck, four great-grandchildren and one sister Amy Jean Price, Chambersburg.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter Pamela Jan Walck Stein in 1998 and a sister Dorothy Price in 1997.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday January 17 at 11:00 A.M. from the Greencastle Presbyterian Church 57 West Baltimore St. Greencastle with Rev. Taylor Camerer officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Chambersburg V.F.W. Post #1599 Honor Guard will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery Greencastle. The family will receive friends at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle on Wednesday evening from 6 - 8 P.M. and at the church one hour before the service on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in his memory to the Greencastle Presbyterian Church 57 West Baltimore St. Greencastle, PA 17225. The Greencastle V.F.W. will hold a memorial service at the funeral home on Wednesday evening at 7:30 P.M. Online condolences may be expressed at www.zimmermanfh.com
