Patricia Ann Smith
Mrs. Patricia Ann Smith, 71, of McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania, died Monday morning, March 5, 2012, at her residence. She was the wife of Mr. Thomas Clifton Smith, her husband of 48 years, whom she married June 8, 1963.
Born November 1, 1940, in Grafton, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late John Andrew and Jane Murphy McDougal. She graduated Grafton High School in 1958 as Valedictorian of her class; and Alderson-Broddus College in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and Physical Education.
Mrs. Smith taught school in Romney, West Virginia, for four years; and later, after raising her family, was a substitute high school teacher in Greencastle and McConnellsburg.
Pat was devoted to her church. She was a member of Greencastle Baptist Church where she taught Sunday and Bible School. For many years she was a teacher and Director of the Release Time Bible Program in Greencastle and McConnellsburg. And, spent four years with her husband after his retirement as Baptist Missionary in South Africa at Xhosa Baptist Churches. While in South Africa she taught Bible Lessons to the ladies as well as one of her favorite pastimes, sewing.
She learned at an early age to sew. Her mother taught her on a Singer Treadle Sewing Machine making her quite a seamstress. Pat not only made her own wedding gown but also her daughters''; and their attendants.
Ten year ago, Pat joined the Fulton County Quilting Club and over time has quilted numerous items. She has won numerous awards for her sewn and quilted items both at quilt shows and the Fulton County Fair.
Pat also enjoyed cooking and tap dancing. She had affection for canaries, raising some to sell and give them to others.
Surviving besides her husband are her children, Timothy A. Smith and wife Ann of Seaford, Delaware, and Leah J. Smith-Witmer and Natalie Jo Knight and husband Mike, all of Greencastle; as well as her grandchildren, Shawn and Tyler Witmer, and Ryan, Jordan and Andrea Knight.
Besides her parents, Pat was preceded in death by her grandson, Bret Witmer in 1998, and brother Jack W. McDougal in 1969, at the age of 30.
Friends may call at Harold M. Zimmerman & Son Funeral Home, 45 South Carlisle, Greencastle, on Friday, March 9, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. The funeral service will be from her church, Greencastle Baptist Church, Saturday, March 10, at 10:00 AM. Her pastor, Rev. Donald Woody will officiate. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.
