Olin L. Hess

Olin Leroy Hess, age 96 of Gainesville, Florida and formerly of Greencastle, PA died Thursday January 21, 2016 in the North Regional Medical Center  in Gainesville. He and his wife had moved from Greencastle to Florida in 1972.

Born March 15, 1919 in Abilene Kansas, he was the son of the late Ira and Mabel (Hoover) Hess.  He married Nora J. (Carbaugh) Hess on March 11, 1944. She died on February 11, 1994.

Olin was a land developer and building contractor in Greencastle and Florida having constructed the Hess Development south of Greencastle off the Williamsport Pike.
He was a former member of the Montgomery Brethren In Christ Church near Mercersburg where he had served as Sunday School Superintendent, trustee and on the building committee. He had organized and was the first president of the Martin’s Mill Bridge Association. Olin owned the land around the bridge which allowed the preservation of the bridge from demolition and the future park area at the bridge to be developed.

He enjoyed fishing and boating on the Potomac River and in Florida. He attended school at the Browns Mill School.

Surviving family are one daughter Nancy Eberly Taylor and husband Mel of Greencastle, two sons, James Hess and wife Clara of Chiefland, FL, Galen Hess and wife Jean of Lake Butler, FL, thirteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, one sister Harriet Finkenbinder and husband Glenn of Clearwater, FL and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister Vera Shull.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday January 28 at 2:00 PM from the Montgomery Brethren In Christ Church 6727 Montgomery Church Rd. Mercersburg with Pastor Raymond Martin officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle on   Wednesday from 6:00 – 8:00 PM and at the church one hour before the service on Thursday.    Online condolences may be expressed at www.zimmermanfh.com.
