Norma Jean Witmer

Norma Jean Witmer, age 82, of Greencastle, PA, passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at Chambersburg Hospital. Born on July 5, 1942, in Hagerstown, MD, she was the daughter of the late Ambrose Earl and Margaret Catherine Carbaugh Izer.

Mrs. Witmer was a 1960 graduate of Greencastle- Antrim Senior High School. She worked as a homemaker, caring for and making sure her family had all they needed. She was a member of Hollowell Brethren in Christ Church and a member of Tops. She was a dedicated school volunteer while her children were in school. Norma Jean loved cooking and baking, especially making her famous cinnamon and black walnut cakes from scratch. Every year she would also bake dozens of various Christmas cookies. One thing is for sure, you never left Norma Jean’s home hungry. She had a magnetic personality, naturally drawing people to her. She enjoyed being around others, laughing with and caring for them. She also enjoyed traveling in her younger years.

Surviving is her beloved husband of 64 years, John L. Witmer, Jr. , whom she married on July 23, 1960, two sons, Sidney Witmer (Sherry Baird of Burlington, NC and Todd Witmer (Amanda) of Inwood, WV; four grandchildren, Amber, Jessica, Liam, and Austin Witmer; and two great-grandchildren, Ava and Blakely. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Curtis Lynn Witmer in 1988.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at 11 AM at the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Inc., 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA, where Deacon Bill Shilling will officiate. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 11, from 6 – 8 PM and also one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service at Cedar Hill Cemetery with a gathering and meal to follow at Hollowell Brethren in Christ Church. As Norma was an avid animal lover, if desired, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 5051 Letterkenny Rd. West, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
