Miriam H. (Hissong) Springer

Miriam Hissong Springer, age 88 of Greencastle, PA died at 4:45 AM Monday, October 2, 2017 in Menno Haven of Chambersburg, PA after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born May 12, 1929 near Mercersburg, PA, she was the daughter of the late T. Ray Hissong and Estella (Ommert) Hissong Benedick. She married her husband John O. Springer on May 22, 1949 in Lemasters, PA. He died on March 24, 2008.

Miriam was a 1947 graduate of the former Lemasters High School. She also graduated from the  Chambersburg Business School and was employed by the Chambersburg Engineering Co. as a bookkeeper.

She assisted her husband in operating Springer’s Garage in Upton, PA for 47 years. Miriam was a member of the St. Stephens Lutheran Church of Upton, member of the Greencastle Women’s Club, Greencastle Homemakers, Greencastle Loyal Daughters, life member of the Greencastle V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Mercersburg American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Miriam loved music and was a soloist in high school and in her church. She also sang many years with the Mercersburg Community Chorus. She enjoyed spending time and visiting with her family and many friends. Her interests included reading, traveling and playing cards with her friends.

Surviving family are three daughters, Deborah S. Walls and husband Clair Jr. of St. Thomas, PA, Linda L. Eiker and husband Ronald of Greencastle, PA, Catherine A. McCain of Doylestown, PA, a son, John P. Springer of Greencastle, six grandchildren, Bryan Walls, Amy Flagle, Emily Shank, Ellen Eiker, Jordan Springer, Jantzen Springer, seven great-grandchildren, two sisters, Carolyn Snyder of Mercersburg and Joanne Harmon of Ohio.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother Wayne and sisters Margaret, June, Evelyn and Betty Lee.

Funeral services will be held on Friday October 6 at 11:00 A.M. from the St. Stephens Lutheran Church 8835 Lemar Rd. Greencastle with Rev. Alan R. Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Greencastle. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle and at the church one hour before the service on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in her memory to the St. Stephens Lutheran Church 8835 Lemar Rd.
