Merna S. (Storer) Slabik, age 89, a resident of the Quincy Colestock Center and formerly of Greencastle, died Monday, August 11, 2014, in the nursing home.

Born in Alton, Kansas, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Isabella Storer. She and her husband Edward J. Slabik were married April 18, 1947, in Arlington, VA. He died on March 20, 2007.

Merna did secretarial work for the Kansas State Dept. of Revenue and Taxation, Dept. of the Navy in Washington, DC, and for her parish church. She graduated from Osborne High School in 1942 and attended the Topeka Business College in Topeka, KS.

She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Greencastle.  She enjoyed memberships in the Greencastle Chapter of the Red Hat Society, Greencastle-Antrim Lioness Club and Greencastle Homemakers.  Also, she belonged to the Greencastle Business Women, Greencastle Exchange Club, Greencastle-Antrim Loyal Daughters, Greencastle Senior Women’s Club and the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post #6319 Ladies Auxiliary.

Merna enjoyed tole painting for 25 years and was a member of the National Tole Painters Association.  She participated in many area craft shows and was known as a creative artisan.

Surviving family are one daughter Mary Anne T. Haffner and husband Daniel of Waynesboro; two sons Edward Michael Slabik and wife Ginny of Timonium, MD, and James Andrew Slabik of Hedgesville, WV; one grandson Andrew Divico; one sister Mary Weaver of Belgrade, MT and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 15, at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church, Jason Dr., Greencastle, with Rev. Alan R. Wilson officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, PA. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service on Friday. Memorial contributions may be given in her memory to Trinity Lutheran Church, 1186 Jason Dr., Greencastle, PA. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.zimmermanfh.com
