1923-2022 Mary (Pappageorge) Lindenfelser

Mary (Pappageorge) Lindenfelser, 98, of Waynesboro, PA, died  Friday, Jan 14 in her home.  Beloved wife of the late William A. Lindenfelser.

Born August 10, 1923 in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan to Greek immigrants, she graduated from The Cooper Union, New York, NY with a bachelor’s degree in art.  Married in 1950, she raised seven children in Merrick, New York, and volunteered in various Curé of Ars Church activities.  She returned to work as a graphic artist at the nearby Freeport Memorial Library, where she also helped organize the employees to negotiate for fair pay.  With her coworkers, she also produced a cookbook for the library.  She loved painting, cooking, sewing, dancing, playing piano, and gardening, and helping out wherever she could.

Moving with her husband upon retirement to Waynesboro, PA, in 1986, Mary volunteered in Saint Mark the Evangelist Church (Greencastle) Parish Council of Catholic Women and Meals on Wheels.  She was a fine cook and became a skilled quilt maker in her retirement.  Vibrant and intelligent but modest, she was dedicated to her large family.  Doting on her children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren, Mary made herself dearly loved and valued by all.

Mary is survived by her children, William M. (Shae Hanford) Lindenfelser of Rochester, NY, Mary Ellen (John) Harte of Berkeley, CA, Paul Lindenfelser of Wayland, NY, Gregory (Ruth Tumbleston) Lindenfelser of Schenectady, NY, Claire Linden of Charlottesville, VA, Elise Davies of Waynesboro, PA, Matthew (Corinne Mundy) Lindenfelser of Vienna, VA, 8 grandchildren (Annemarie, Nerissa, Alexandra, Julia, Theo, André, Grace, and Emma) and 2 great-grandchildren (Remy and Mara); and by her nieces and nephews, all beloved.

Mary will be buried next to her husband in a private graveside ceremony at St. Andrew's Catholic Cemetery, Waynesboro, PA. Arrangements are entrusted to the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home in Greencastle, PA.  The family requests the omission of flowers.  If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Hartley House, 413 West 46th St. New York, NY 10036 or online at http://hartleyhouse.org/donate-1 .  Hartley House serves school-age children, youth, and seniors in Hell’s Kitchen by enriching their lives, expanding their opportunities, and building a sense of community.
