Mary Ellen (Burkholder) Martin, age 88, of Maugans Ave. Hagerstown, MD died in her home at 10:08 AM Sunday, November 9, 2014.
Born June 7, 1926 in Washington County, Maryland near Paramount, she was the daughter of the late Edgar H. and Hannah E. (Martin) Burkholder. Her husband Menno Abram Martin died August 15, 1998.
She had worked at the former Martin’s Food Market of Hagerstown. Mary Ellen was a member of the Paradise Mennonite Church of Hagerstown.
Surviving family are four sons Lee E. Martin and wife Genevieve of Baltimore, MD, Arvin D. Martin and wife Alice of Hagerstown, Dennis R. Martin and wife Mary Sue of Waltham, MN, David L. Martin and wife Diane of Lima, OH; two daughters, Arliss M. Strite and husband Calvin of Hagerstown, Ruby A. Strite and husband Richard of Arthur , IL; twenty-seven grandchildren, seventy-five great-grandchildren, two sisters, Emma Eby of Hagerstown, Ruth Diller of Greencastle; four brothers Martin L. Burkholder of Greencastle, Edgar Burkholder Jr. of Edenville, PA, Paul Burkholder, Smithsburg, MD, Chester Burkholder of Hagerstown.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two grandsons, three brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be held on Friday November 14 at 10:00 AM from the Reiff Mennonite Church near Cearfoss, MD with the Paradise Mennonite Church Ministry officiating. Burial will be in the Conococheague Mennonite Church Cemetery near Hagerstown. The family will receive friends at the Reiff Mennonite Church on Thursday from 2- 4 PM and 6 – 8 PM and one hour before the service on Friday. The family requests that flowers be omitted.
