Martha Ann (Shank) Mccleary

Martha Ann Shank McCleary, age 85, of Greencastle, PA, passed peacefully on to eternal life on Sunday, October 9, 2022, at the Shook Home in Chambersburg, with her son, Robert by her side. Born June 1, 1937, in Greencastle, she was a daughter of the late Merle Ellsworth and Anna Belle Smith Shank.

A 1954 graduate of the Greencastle-Antrim Senior High School, Martha went on to graduate from the former Waynesboro Business School in 1955. She worked at the former Fairchild Industries, Dixie restaurant, and as a teacher’s aide at Marion Elementary School before going to work at DESCOM at Letterkenny Army Depot, where she retired from in 1996. After retirement, she continued working as a teacher’s aide at the Franklin Learning Center. A lifelong member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Greencastle she was active in the Gleaners Sunday School Class, where she taught Sunday School for 38 years and as a Greeter. She was also active in the Lutheran Church Women, food pantry, clothing bank, Nursery, Stephen Ministry Program, Christian Education Committee, and Church Counsel, serving as Secretary. She also was a member of the Women’s League at Nellie Fox Bowl. Martha enjoyed Greencastle’s Old Home Week, attending her 68th class reunion this year during Old Home Week. Her interests included taking bus trips with the Marion Crew, family picnics, especially those to Cowan’s Gap in the Fall, hosting Christmas at her home, and operating the Marion Festival snow cone stand with her husband, Charles.

Surviving are two sons, W. Bradley McCleary (wife Gwyn) of Chambersburg, PA and Robert R. McCleary of Greencastle, PA; three grandchildren, Zachary McCleary (wife Mary), Rebecca McCleary, and Sara McCleary; four great-grandchildren, Allison McCleary, Kyden Wolfe, Scarlet McCleary, and Delaney McCleary; and two siblings, James E. Shank (wife Mary) of Waynesboro, PA and Bonita J. Shank of Greencastle, PA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Charles Robert McCleary in 2021 and a son, C. Christopher McCleary in 1987.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at 3 PM at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Greencastle, 130 N. Washington St., Greencastle, PA 17225, where Pastor Martin Horn will officiate. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service in the above church. Arrangements are entrusted to the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Inc., Greencastle, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the above church and address.
