Martha Ellen (Horst) Martin-Denlinger, age 87, formerly of Johnstons Lane, Mercersburg, died February 26, 2010 at Manor Care in Chambersburg where she was a resident since May 2007.
Born Feb. 20, 1923 in Greene Township, Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Martha (Martin) Horst.
She worked at Stanley Company and E.L.M Department Store prior to her marriage Nov. 6 1945 to Glenn I. Martin of Reid, Md. They engaged in dairy farming on Blairs Valley Rd., Mercersburg for 33 years. He preceded her in death in March 1995.
She is survived by their nine children: Hannah (Mrs. Theodore) Mast of Bladensburg, Md., Titus and his wife Linda (Lehman) of Fayetteville, Glenn and his wife Debra (Dietle), Marcus and his wife Loretta (Snider), Chester and his wife Jane (Lehman) all of Mercersburg, Julia (Mrs. Lynn) Wiebe of Glendale, Az., Sylvia (Mrs. Paul) Hykes, of Chambersburg, Mariann Martin of Mercersburg, and Patricia (Mrs. Larry) Hege of Greencastle; 20 grandchildren, and 5 great-
grandchildren. Two infant great-grandchildren had preceded her in death.
On Aug 7, 1999 she married Roy D. Denlinger of Chambersburg. He preceded her in death in Oct 2003.
She is survived by seven step-children: Geraldine (Mrs. Christian) Frey, Marlin (husband of Lois Meyers), Janice (Mrs. Dennis) Bricker, Karen (Mrs. Wayne) Lehman, all of Chambersburg, Suetta (Mrs. Nevin) Grove of Greencastle, Darlene (Mrs. Nelson) Meyers of Mercersburg, and Ronald (husband of Ruby Showalter) of Maugansville, Md; 29 step-grandchildren and 17 step-great grandchildren.
Also surviving are one sister Lina Horst of Hagerstown, Md. and one brother Samuel Horst of Greencastle. Also, preceding her in death were one brother Michael Horst and 4 sisters Fannie Martin, Lydia Wadel, Elizabeth Shantz, and Mary Eshleman.
Martha was a member of Mercersburg Mennonite Church. An avid Bible student, she taught Sunday School most of her life, led a community ladies Bible Study and told Bible stories at Release Time. Martha cared deeply for children and provided child care for various church meetings in the county and for Mom''s Morning Out at Mercersburg Mennonite.
She worked with Headstart at Ft. Loudon at its beginning in the 1960''s and later served as PTA president of Montgomery Elementary School for 10 years. In the 1970''s she drove school bus in the Tuscarora School District. In 1981 at age 58 she became a home health aide and worked for Lutheran Social Services for 2 years. Afterwards she was a private caregiver for ladies in their homes. She was active in the Lemasters and Tuscarora Senior Centers.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday March 4 at 11:00 A.M. from the Mercersburg
Mennonite Church with Revs. Allen Eshleman and Lloyd Gingrich officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery immediately following the service. Visitation will be held at Mercersburg Mennonite Church on Wednesday, March 3 from 6 to 9 pm and one hour before the service on Thursday.
