Luther Elwood Grove, Jr. (also known as J.R.), age 82, of 503 Cherry Circle, Messiah Village, Mechanicsburg, PA,and formerly of Hagerstown, MD., passed on to his new life in heaven on Saturday, July 23, 2011, at Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, PA. Born November 11, 1928 in Hagerstown, MD to Luther and Katie Grove, he is the brother of Martha Miller, John Grove, Arthur Grove, Erma Grove, Clarence Grove, Amanda Dick and Leona Musselman. He married Leona Catharine Parmer of Greencastle, PA; they were looking forward to celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on September 1, 2011.
Luther worked the family farm from 1950 to 1967, where he loved raising cattle and crops on his beloved birthplace. He retained ownership of the farm until 1999 and continued to visit it frequently although he had moved to a home in nearby Northcrest Manor. He also worked as a plumber from 1951 to 1994, first at Ebersole Plumbing and later for Oliver Homes Construction in the Hagerstown area. He and Leona moved to Messiah Retirement Village in Mechanicsburg, PA in 1999.
Luther''s childhood church was Cedar Grove Mennonite Church in Greencastle, PA. Later he became a member of Paramount Brethren in Christ Church in Paramount, MD, where he served as a church deacon and trustee, helped in the Sunday school nursery , and sang in the choir. He was also a board member at Heritage Academy in Hagerstown, MD, and was active in the Christian Businessmen''s Committee. As a Messiah Village resident, he volunteered at the Children''s Family Center, where he enjoyed caring for young children, and he helped to raise funds as part of the Connections Campaign. He was an active member of the Messiah Village Church.
Luther is survived by his wife, Leona; daughters Karen Grove and her husband Jay Ach, Jolene Ness and her husband Randy; grandchildren Jaron, Katie (and her husband Josh Abro) and Natalie; and sisters Amanda Dick and Leona Musselman.
Luther will be remembered for his congeniality, sense of humor, generosity and the joy he brought to so many. He made everyone feel at ease with his good-hearted quips, witty nicknames, and unassuming manner. He loved airplanes and living near the Hagerstown airport; he took pleasure in playing golf and horseshoes, traveling and, most of all, spending time with his grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Messiah Village Church on Wednesday, July 27 at 2:30 p.m., with a visitation hour beginning at 1:30 p.m. He will be buried at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the Christian Retreat Center, 369 CRC Drive, East Waterford, PA 17021 or to Messiah Village Endowment Fund, 100 Mount Allen Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
