Lina Ruth Horst
Lina Ruth Horst, age 93 of the Williamsport Retirement Village and formerly of Nottingham Road Hagerstown, MD died of pneumonia complications at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown on Monday March 5, 2018.
She was born October 3, 1924 near Chambersburg, PA; she was the daughter of the late Samuel H. and Martha (Martin) Horst.
Surviving family are two sons, Thomas E. Horst and wife Nancy; Marvin S. Horst and wife Marcia; three daughters, Rachel E. Mobley and husband Ed; Rhoda L. Mathews and husband Dennis; Rebecca S. Clever and husband Keith; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, one brother, Samuel H. Horst Jr. and one son-law Rev. John C. Koontz.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six siblings, husband Abram S. Horst and one daughter L. Ruth Koontz.
Lina spent most of her childhood on a farm along Back Creek near St. Thomas, PA, where she went to school in the class 3 years ahead of Nellie Fox of Baseball’s Hall of Fame. Her family was an instrumental part of the Williamson, now Mercersburg Mennonite Church. Over the years she attended Cedar Grove, Northside and Hebron Mennonite Churches. She was employed for 21 ½ years at Washington County Hospital, now Meritus Medical Center in the nursery department.
Lina loved to sing and knew a song or poem for many birds, animals and life events. She was known as an excellent cook and seamstress. She was “Grandma” to many people who were not actually related to her. Lina loved babies and children.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday March 10 at 10:00 AM at the Broadfording Church of the Brethren Fellowship, 14010 Greencastle Pike Hagerstown, MD with Rev. Marilyn Henderson officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle, PA and at the church one hour before the service on Saturday. Flowers are welcome and memorial contributions may be given in her memory to Hebron Church 13315 Highlane Street Hagerstown, MD 21742. Online condolences may be expressed at www.zimmermanfh.com.
