Leona C. Martin
Leona C. Martin, age 90 of Chambersburg, PA and formerly of Marion passed away on Wednesday evening January 16, 2013 at Menno Haven Retirement Center.
Born January 3, 1923 in Waynesboro, PA, she was the daughter of the late Lewis W. and Whaneta (Helman) Cordell. Leona was a 1941 graduate of Chambersburg High School.
After graduation she began a career with the Franklin County Commissioners where she retired in 1984 as head of the Franklin County Tax Claim Office. She ran efficient yet friendly tax collection organization and was respected and admired by all those worked in the Courthouse - even those who came to her office to pay back taxes. Leona was affectionately known as "Mother" Martin since she treated everyone as family and could be counted on to provide pies and other treats to the attorneys who regularly stopped by her office.
Leona was a lifetime member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Marion where she sang in the choir and served on the Church Council. She was active in the Norland AARP, Meals on Wheels and Lutheran Brown Bag.
Her husband, Samuel L. Martin whom she married on January 24, 1942, preceded her in death on October 9, 1978.
Surviving family are one son Samuel L. Martin III, Virginia Beach, VA, three daughters, Kay Lagiovane and husband Peter of Chambersburg, Ann Schnabel and husband William of Greencastle, Nancy Hart and husband John, Marion, six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one sister Joanne Shoop, Littleton CO.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brothers Lloyd and Lewis Cordell and a sister Gay Hoagland.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday January 20 at 2:30 P.M. from the Salem Lutheran Church 99 Miller Road, Marion with Rev. Denise Horn officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday from 1:00 - 2:30 P.M. The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorial contributions be made in her memory to the Salem Lutheran Church 99 Miller Rd. Chambersburg, PA 17202 or to the charity of ones choice.
