Leona V. Haldeman
Leona Virginia (Secrest) Haldeman, age 93, formerly of Greencastle, PA and who lived with her granddaughter Jennifer Mammen in Pittsford, NY for two years before entering the Highlands Living Center in Pittsford this past July, died Wednesday evening December 17, 2014 in the Highlands Center.
Born July 16, 1921 in Montgomery Township, Franklin County, PA, she was the daughter of the late Marvin M. and Virginia (Angle) Secrest. She married Glenn Kuhn Haldeman on April 17, 1946 in Chambersburg. He died on January 3, 2004.
Leona was a homemaker and in her earlier years she had worked at the former J.J. Newberry, Stanley Co. and J.C. Penny all of Chambersburg. She was a member of the Shanks Church Of The Brethren near Greencastle where she served as a teacher in the Sunday School and Bible School. Leona enjoyed cooking, flowers and gardening.
Surviving family are two daughters Judith Schoonmaker of Barnstable, Massachusetts, Carolyn Demarest, Wood Cliff Lake, NJ, two granddaughters and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sisters Hazel Hunsberger, Ruby Bitner, Esther Aughinbaugh and brothers Seth, Clarence and Marvin Secrest.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday December 27 at 11:00 AM from the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the Cedar Hill Cemetery Greencastle. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in her memory to the Shanks Church Of The Brethren 7535 Talhelm Rd. Chambersburg, PA 17202.
