Laban R. Showalter, age 93 a resident of Menno Haven in Chambersburg and formerly of Hagerstown, MD. died at 2:15 P.M. Tuesday, July 26, 2011 in the nursing center.

Born February 11, 1918 in Washington County, MD., he was the son of the late Martin W. and Katie E. (Reiff) Showalter.

In his earlier life he was a farmer and milk truck driver for 30 years and had retired after 18 years service from Mack Truck of Hagerstown.

He was a member of the Salem Ridge Community Church of Greencastle and more recently was a member of the North Side Mennonite Church of Hagerstown.

Laban was a member of the Mason Dixon Barbershop Chorus and was an amateur radio operator. He enjoyed volunteering at the Cove Valley Christian Youth Camp near Mercersburg.

His first wife, Ethel M. (Risser) Showalter died November 30, 1988.

Surviving family are his wife Ruth (Thompson) Moore Showalter, a resident of Menno Haven Chambersburg, two daughters, Ruth Ann and husband Joseph Martin, Greencastle, PA., Barbara and husband Nelson Frey, Newville, PA., two sons Harold and wife Esther Showalter, Greencastle, PA., Lewis "Sonny" and wife Rachel Showalter, State Line, PA., one brother Clarence Showalter, Hagerstown, MD., nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a brother Elmer Showalter and a sister Iva Grove.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday July 31 at 3:00 P.M. from the Salem Ridge Community Church 441 Pensinger Rd. Greencastle with Pastors Gary Zook and Roger Martin officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday from 1:30 P.M. - 3:00 P.M. Burial and graveside services will be in the adjoining church cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in his memory to the Cove Valley Christian Youth Camp 5357 Little Cove Rd. Mercersburg, PA. 17236. Arrangements were handled by the Harold M.
