Joseph "Joe" M. Shatzer, Jr.

Joseph M. Shatzer, Jr., 87, of Waynesboro, PA, passed away on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 at Quincy Village. Born December 18, 1936 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Joseph M. Shatzer, Sr., and Edyth Sanders Shatzer. His beloved wife, Lois J. Berger Shatzer, whom he married on February 25, 1956, preceded him in death on November 16, 2020.

Joseph attended Greencastle-Antrim High School where Lois was his high school sweetheart. He was employed as an operator for the Western Maryland Railroad, later CSX, for 43 years until his retirement. He was a member of the Order of the Railroad Telegraphers, and the Transportation Communication International Union. Joseph enjoyed farming, bowling, golfing, and coaching baseball when his sons were younger.

He is survived by six children, Gary Shatzer of Waynesboro, Jay Shatzer (Patty) of Waynesboro, Thomas Shatzer (Peggy) of Waynesboro, Carol Shatzer-Goolsby (Ralph) of Martinsburg, WV, Timothy Shatzer (Andie) of Waynesboro, and Durene Shatzer-High (Butch) of Moyock, NC; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and one brother, Michael Shatzer. Aside from his parents and wife, Joseph was preceded in death by his brother Fred Shatzer.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, November 16, 2024 at the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA 17225. Rev. Dr. A. Robert Cook will officiate. Interment will follow the service in Brown’s Mill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
