John A. Wine, 88, of Greencastle, died at 5:20 PM on Saturday, November 20, 2010, at his home in Greencastle.
Born on November 14, 1922, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Edgar P. Wine and Natalie R. Wine. He was the stepson of the late Helen Ryder Wine.
Mr. Wine had been married 63 years to his late wife, Matilda Sloan Wine, who died on June 23, 2009.
Mr. Wine was a 1940 graduate of the Greencastle High School. He also studied at the Waynesboro Business College. In 1939, Mr. Wine enlisted with the Chambersburg Troop D104 Cavalry, Pennsylvania National Guard, at the age of 17. His unit was federalized prior to World War II and saw action during World War II as an artillery unit in Northern Africa, Italy, France, and Germany. His unit served continuously for over one year in a combat zone. Mr. Wine received the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, American Service Medal, Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and the Croix de Guerre French Medal with one Silver Star. Shortly after World War II, Mr. Wine joined the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk and retired in 1981 as Postmaster of the Greencastle Post Office with over 33 years of service.
Mr. Wine was a Charter and Life Member and Past Commander of the Harry D. Zeigler Post 6319 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Greencastle.
During his lifetime, Mr. Wine was very active in the Greencastle-Antrim community, having served as Cub Master of Pack 13 and Scout Master of Troop 13; Greencastle Elementary School PTA President; Greencastle Civil Defense Director; Secretary of the Greencastle-Antrim School Authority; member of the Greencastle Shade Tree Commission; President of the Moss Spring Swim Club; President (1995-32nd Triennial), Secretary, and Treasurer of the Greencastle-Antrim Old Home Week Association; President and Treasurer of The Lilian S. Besore Memorial Library; Elder and Clerk of Session of the Greencastle Presbyterian Church; and President of Church Council of the Greencastle Evangelical Lutheran Church. He also was Past Master of Mount Pisgah Lodge No. 443 Free and Accepted Masons. Mr. Wine was a member of the Allison-Antrim Museum, Inc., Narrows Gunning & Game Protective Association, and the Waynesboro Country Club. He enjoyed playing golf and, in his earlier years, square dancing and playing the drums.
Mr. Wine is survived by one daughter, Josephine W. Spitz, and her husband, Raymond, of Surfside Beach, South Carolina; one son, J. Edgar Wine, and his wife, Deborah, of Greencastle; four grandchildren, William A. Spitz of Raleigh, North Carolina, Susan E. Spitz of Richmond, Virginia, Kathryn C. Wine of Greencastle, and Elizabeth A. Wine of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and a niece and several nephews. In addition to his wife, parents, and stepmother, he was preceded in death by one brother, Robert E. Wine, and one sister, Dorothy Snyder.
Services will be held on Friday, November 26, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. from the Greencastle Presbyterian Church, 57 West Baltimore Street with Rev. Dr. H. Richard McClain officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Chambersburg VFW Post #1599 Honor Guard will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 P.M. at the Harold M. Zimmerman & Son Funeral Home, Greencastle and one hour before the service on Friday at the church. The Greencastle V.F.W. will hold a memorial service at 7:30 P.M. and the Mt. Pisgah Masonic Lodge will hold a Masonic service at 8 P.M. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
