John Ezra Wene, age 84 of Orchard Circle, Greencastle, Pa. died on Thursday afternoon, July 5, 2007 in the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa.
Born December 5, 1922 in Norton, Hunterdon County, N.J., he was the son of the late Earl Dilts and Laura Marguerite (Trout) Wene. He grew on a Pittstown, N.J. farm, now used for agricultural research by Rutgers University.
He was a member of Greencastle Presbyterian Church.
He and his wife, Colleen (Van Arsdale) Wene, were married on September 28, 1951, in Plainfield, N.J. She died on June 18, 2001.
Mr. Wene attended Flemington (N.J.) High School and studied radio at NYA camp in North Haldon, N.J.
In 1962, he moved to Greencastle from South Plainfield, N.J., when Mack Trucks Inc. moved its Plainfield operations to Hagerstown, MD. He retired from Mack with 37 years of service on October 1, 1987. Earlier, he worked for Western Electric in Kearny, N.J.
A U.S. Navy Armed Guard veteran of World War II, he served from March 31, 1943 to January 18, 1946, in the South Pacific Theatre. He sailed on the Willard A. Holbrook, William H. Seward and Irvin L. Hunt ships.
A life member of Harry D. Zeigler Post 6319 and Rescue Hose Company No. 1, both of Greencastle, he was a member of UAW Local 171 Retirees Club of Maugansville, MD., and a former member of Mack Golden Bulldogs.
Over the years, he enjoyed traveling, having driven cross-country in a 1954 Chevy; gardening; radio and TV repair; yard work; deep sea fishing; CB radios; receiving Johnny Mize baseball cards, as he served with him in the Navy; reading; and flying the airplane he had owned.
Surviving are a daughter, Janice Lynne (husband of Ted) Haas, Chambersburg; a grandson, Sammy, whom he adored; a foster grandson; a sister-in-law, Joyce V. Bohem, Hampton, N.J.; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death: two brothers, Philip and Watson, and a sister, Mary Sutphen.
Funeral services will be at held on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 P.M. from the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, with Rev. Darlene Kline officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service in the funeral home on Sunday. The Greencastle V.F.W. will hold a memorial service at 1:00 P.M. at the funeral home on Sunday. Private graveside services will be later in the Locust Grove Cemetery, Quakertown, N.J. Memorial contributions may be made to Greencastle Presbyterian Church, 57 W.
