John Vernon Stockslager, age 86, of Walnut Creek, OH and formerly of Grantsville, MD and Greencastle, PA, passed away on Thursday, January 3, 2019, at the Walnut Hills Nursing Home, Walnut Creek, OH. Born December 17, 1932, in Duffield, PA, he was the son of the late John W. and Esther E. Fox Stockslager.
Mr. Stockslager was a graduate of Messiah Academy in Grantham, PA. He worked as an electrician for 38 years, retiring in 1995. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 307 in Cumberland, MD. A compassionate person, Mr. Stockslager along with his late wife supported the Navajo Brethren in Christ Mission in New Mexico since the 1950’s, starting with a six-month mission term for their honeymoon; he was also a supporter of the Union Rescue Mission in Hagerstown, MD. A talented musician, he loved to sing, play various instruments, lead music at church, and sing in quartets. He was the founder of the Stockslager Family Singers and a bluegrass music store known as “Acoustic Music Outfitters” in Grantsville, MD. Mr. Stockslager served in many capacities at many churches including lay preacher, deacon, and Sunday School teacher.
Surviving are three children, Reverend Guy Stockslager (wife Susan) of Rustburg, VA, Gale Livengood (late husband Reverend Ken) of Dover, OH, and Todd Stockslager (wife Vickie) of Murrysville, PA; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Hess Stockslager in 2010.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 7, 2019, at 1:00 PM in the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA where Reverend Guy Stockslager will officiate. The family will receive friends in the funeral home on Sunday, January 6, 2019, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM and one hour prior to the service on Monday. Interment will be in New Guilford Cemetery, Chambersburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Union Rescue Mission of Hagerstown, MD (125 N Prospect St, Hagerstown, MD 21741) and the Navajo Brethren in Christ Mission in New Mexico (240 NM-57, Bloomfield, NM 87413).
