John D. Long, age 90, a resident of Penn Hall, Chambersburg, PA since August 2003, and formerly of 6645 Long Rd., Greencastle, PA died Wednesday afternoon, December 19, 2007 in the Penn Hall Nursing Center.
Born, February 27, 1917 in Maugansville, MD he was the son of the late J. Franklin and Katie Susan (Grossnickle) Long.
Mr. Long was a member of the Hade''s Church of the Brethren near Greencastle, PA where he taught Sunday School. He was a life deacon in the Church of the Brethren.
Mr. Long is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Witter) Long to whom he was married for 65 years.
Surviving family in addition to his wife are:
Two Sons, J. David Long of Greencastle, PA and Mark W. Long of Mercersburg, PA.
Three Daughters, Naomi E. Stambaugh of Winchester, VA; Lois A. Hilty of Thomasville, PA; and Dorcas M. Lehigh of Rochester, NY.
One Sister, Myrtle Haldeman of Hagerstown, MD.
20 Grandchildren and 37 Great-Grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother Joseph F. Long in 2006, and one sister, Kathryn E. Long in 2007.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 24, 2007 at 10:30 A.M. form the Welsh Run Church of the Brethren, 11420 Welsh Run Rd., Mercersburg, PA with Ministers Donald Clapper, George Martin, Dean Gearhart, and Chaplain Robert Keener officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, on Sunday evening from 6 to 8 P.M. and at the church one hour before the service on Monday.
