John Eber Burkholder

John Eber Burkholder, 99, of Chambersburg, and formerly of Maugansville, went to be with his Lord Monday morning, June 4, 2012, at Menno Haven, Chambersburg. He was the husband of the late Violet Shank Burkholder who preceded him in death on January 16, 2009.

Born on July 7, 1912, in Hagerstown, he was a son of the late Henry S. and Mary G. Horst Burkholder.

In 1936, in Maugansville, he opened and operated with his wife, Violet, Burkholder''s Floor Covering. In the early 1950''s, the business moved to its present location on Pennsylvania Avenue. He remained active with the business until his retirement in his late eighties.

He was a member of Salem Ridge Community Church, Greencastle. In later years his devotion led he and his wife to many parts of the world on mission trips responding to human needs.

He is survived by his children, Marlin Burkholder and wife Charlotte of Harrisonburg, Virginia, Jean Peifer and husband Ken of Hagerstown, Maryland, and Joyce Burkholder of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; six grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren; as well as his older sister, Edith Burkholder of Maugansville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the Harold M. Zimmerman & Son Funeral Home, 45 South Carlisle Street, Greencastle, Pennsylvania, on Thursday, June 7, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The funeral service will be held at his church, Salem Ridge Community Church, 441 Pensinger Road, Greencastle, on Friday, June 8, at 11:00 AM. Chaplain Vernon D. Isner, of Menno-Haven, assisted by Rev. Galen H. Lehman and Rev. Roger I. Martin, will officiate. Interment will follow in the church yard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Menno Haven Benevolent Care Fund, 2085 Scotland Avenue, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania 17201.
