John Lloyd Acker, age 94, of Cascade, MD and formerly of Greencastle, PA, passed away at his
daughter’s home on Saturday, August 4, 2018. Born May 5, 1924, in New Enterprise, PA, he
was the son of the late John Amos and Anna Lena Rock Acker.
A 1942 graduate of J. Leonard Replogle High School, Bedford, PA, Mr. Acker went on to
serve honorably in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He served on the Aircraft Carrier the USS
Cabot, as a Radar Operator in the Pacific Fleet until 1945. Mr. Acker worked as a machine
operator at Mack Truck in Hagerstown for 24 years, retiring in 1986.
Mr. Acker was a member of Otterbein United Brethren Church, the VFW Post 6319, American Legion Post 373,
Greencastle Sportsman’s Association, National Wild Turkey Federation,
West End Hunting Club, U.S.S Cabot Association, and Sampson Navy Training Station.
An avid outdoorsman, Mr.Acker cherished time in the Turkey Woods and spending time with his family.
Surviving is his beloved wife, Jean D. Acker, whom he married on July 29, 1950 ; a daughter,
Leisa M. Rice (husband Kevin) of Cascade, MD; Grandson, Tyler Shetter, age 30, who is a SSgt
of the U.S Marine Corp, stationed in Twentynine Palms, CA ; four great-grandchildren, Adelina,
Jacob, Brandon, and Alyssa. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a a brother,
Elmer Acker of Nevada.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 9, 2018, at 10 AM at the Harold M.
Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA, where Pastor David
Rawley will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, August
8, 2018, from 6 – 8 PM and one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Interment will follow the
service in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made
to the Otterbein United Brethren Church of Greencastle, 146 Leitersburg St, Greencastle, PA 17225
or Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave. Hagerstown, MD 21742.
