Jerry E. Houpt, age 62 of 405 East Leitersburg St. Greencastle, Pa. died at 9:25 A.M. Wednesday April 30, 2008 in the Washington County Hospital Hagerstown, Md. He had been in failing health since February 2008.
Born January 14, 1946 in Antrim Twp. Franklin Co. Pa., he was the son of the late James W. and Mary Ellen (Provard) Houpt.
He had retired after 25 years of service with the former United Telephone Co. as an installer and repairman.
Mr. Houpt was a social member of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post #6319 and the Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post #373, both of Greencastle. He was a member of the V.F.W. horseshoe league.
He was a P.I.A.A. umpire in baseball and softball and also umpired games in the little, pony, legion and adult leagues. He bowled in leagues at Nellie Fox in Chambersburg and Dual Lanes in Hagerstown.
His interests included listening to bluegrass music at the Arrow Horse in Gettysburg, hunting and raccoon hunting.
Mr. Houpt was a 1964 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School and he was a veteran of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
He and his wife, Virginia L. (Helfrick) Houpt were married July 30, 1967 in Waynesboro.

Five sisters, Amy Rice, Gay Buchanan and Pam Clay all of Greencastle, Nancy Keefer, Mercersburg and Betty Anderson, Pittsburgh, Pa.
Four brothers, David Houpt, Germany, James W. Houpt, Florida, Robert Houpt, West Virginia and Tom Houpt, Greencastle.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday May 6 at 11:00 A.M. from the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle with Rev. Gayle L. Ruble Sr.officiating. Burial will be in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6 - 9 P.M. and one hour before the service on Tuesday.
