Jane Conrad Alexander, age 93 a resident of the Falling Spring Nursing And Rehabilitation Center Chambersburg and formerly of South Washington St. Greencastle
died at 5:05 A.M. Monday August 29, 2011 in the nursing home.
Born June 3, 1918 in Greencastle, PA., she was the daughter of the late John Thompson and Olive (Palmer) Conrad.
She was a 1936 graduate of Greencastle High School and a 1941 graduate of Chambersburg Business College. After completing Business College, she worked for the State of Penna. in the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Harrisburg before accepting a position with the U.S. State Department World Trade Intelligence Division where she was an Intelligence Data Coordinator during World War II.
She was married to Charles Theodore Alexander Sr. on Sept. 7, 1946. Jane lived in Tupelo Mississippi, where she was active in the Presbyterian Church and sang in the church choir. While in Tupelo she worked for the Universal C.I.T. and the General Adjustment Bureau. Following the death of her husband on October 14, 1949, she returned to Greencastle and worked at the former Poper Bros. Grocery Store. For several years she was the Republican Committeeperson for Greencastle District 1 and also served as the local chairperson for the Salvation Army until she accepted a position with the Social Security Administration when they opened an office in Chambersburg in 1956 and retiring in 1978.
After retirement, she worked on assignments through a temporary agency until 1992. She worked for United Telephone, Martin And Kornfield Attorneys, F& M Bank, Chambersburg Hospital and Richard Diller of Advanced Electronics. She also assisted her brother, the late W.P. Conrad and her son, Ted Alexander in their historical writings. Following the death of her brother, she edited some of his unpublished papers for publication in the Echo-Pilot newspaper. She served as a volunteer at the former Academy for the Deaf located in the old Browns Mill School. She also did volunteer work with the Greencastle School District.
Jane was a member of the National Daughters of the American Revolution Society, Falling Spring Chapter of American Business Women''s Assn., Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post #6319 Auxiliary, Greencastle-Antrim Senior Woman''s Club, member and recording secretary of the Allison-Antrim Museum. She was a former member of the Greencastle-Antrim Loyal Daughters, sang with the Sweet Adelines of Hagerstown and had served on
The Greencastle Antrim School Board.
Surviving family are one son Charles (Ted) Alexander Jr. and daughter-in-law Avelina (Billy) Alexander, both of Greencastle, one granddaughter Ricavelle (Rica) and husband Lhyn Dyas of Manteo, N.C., brother-in-law A.J. Alexander of Wiggins, MS., and one step-granddaughter Claire Dyas and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers W.P. Conrad, Joseph Conrad, John T. Conrad Jr., and sisters Sue Conrad Poper, Nan Conrad Flaherty and a sister-in-law Virginia Alexander.
A graveside memorial service at the Cedar Hill Cemetery Greencastle will be announced at a later time. There will be no viewing. Memorial contributions may be given in her memory to the Allison-Antrim Museum 365 South Ridge Ave. Greencastle, PA. 17225. Arrangements were made by the Harold M.
