Jan M. Shafer age 70, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 14, 2024, at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born July 13, 1954, in Waynesboro, PA, she was the daughter of the late Francis D. and Bette Jayne Beam McIntire, Sr.
Mrs. Shafer was a 1972 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim Senior High School. She started her career working at Carlisle Rubber, then on to the Teamsters of Hagerstown, MD, and finally working for the Federal Government. She began her civil service career at Letterkenny Army Depot, then on to the Carlisle War College, and finally to Ft. Detrick in Frederick, MD, where she would retire as a Telecommunications Specialist in October of 2016, after 32 total years of government service. Jan was a member of Grace UCC Church, the Order of the Eastern Star Martha Custis Chapter 342, a former co-owner of the Treasure Trove, Past Auxiliary President of the VFW Post 6319 Ladies Auxiliary, and former Vice President of the Greencastle Borough Council. To say Jan was a shopaholic would be an understatement, but she enjoyed going out shopping, the kicker being none of the items were for her, the joy came in giving to others. Jan had a heart of gold, she continually was looking “To Pay it Forward”, always looking to help someone in need. She loved to entertain and cook, where she would prepare for her guests as if they were royalty. She also loved planning events, collecting Longaberger baskets, and the history of Shady Grove and Greencastle, where she enjoyed living. Notably, Jan spearheaded the revitalization Project of repainting the Underpass on Baltimore Street in Greencastle, which she saw through to completion.
Surviving is her beloved husband of 39 years, Ron Shafer; three children, Dave Barry (Karrie) of Hancock, MD, Steve Barry (Susie) of Chambersburg, PA, and Kelli Statler (Scott) of Greencastle, PA; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two siblings, Barbara Trumpower (Raymond) of Greencastle, PA and Patricia Jo Heller of Carrollton, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Francis D. “Pete” McIntire, Jr. and her beloved dog, Molly.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 18, 2024, at 11 AM in the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Inc., 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA, where Pastor Mark Ruzicka will officiate. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 17, 2024, from 6 – 9 PM and on Friday one hour prior to the service in the funeral home and address above. Interment will follow the service in Cedar Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jan’s name to the Grace United Church of Christ, 128 E. Baltimore St., Greencastle, PA 17225. Online condolences may be offered on her Book of Memories page at www.zimmermanfh.com.
