James G. “Jimmy” Smith, age 71, of State Line, PA, passed away at the Chambersburg Hospital on Friday morning, June 17, 2022, with his family by his side. Born July 28, 1950, in Waynesboro, PA, he was the son of the late James J. and Thelma Reeder Smith.
Jimmy was a 1968 graduate of the Greencastle-Antrim High School. He served honorably in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1969-1974. Jimmy was the co-owner and operator of the former J.J. Smith and Sons Painting for 54 years. He was a member of the Mercersburg American Legion and the Red Man Club in Williamsport, MD. Jimmy was an avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting, especially turkey hunting; fishing; going to the cabin with his best friend, Rick Nicarry, staying busy; and chit-chatting about old times.
Surviving is his wife of 32 years, Roxanne Ball Smith, whom he married on May 12, 1990, three children, Michelle L. Smith-Plessinger (husband Frank) of Greencastle, PA, Jeannie M. Smith (husband Tony) of Hagerstown, MD, and Jimmy G. Smith of State Line, PA; two grandchildren, Ashton Barnhart and Riley Smith; his best friend, Rick Nicarry; cousins, Pam Tetlow; and Clifford Smith; father-in-law, George C. Ball, Sr.; and brothers-in-law, George C. Ball, Jr. and Jimmy Ball (wife Missy). In addition, he is survived by his faithful friend, Freddy and numerous other extended family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jerry L. Smith, sister, Sharon A. Tosten, mother-in-law, ginger Ball, and furry friend, Bunz.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at 1 PM in the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Inc., 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, PA, where Rev. Dr. Stephen Reed will officiate. The family will receive friend one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Interment will follow the service in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family would like to thank all the staff at the Chambersburg Hospital, especially nurses, Brooke, Brianna, and Lisa for their attentive care and all who came to visit with Jimmy. The family also wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the Greencastle Family Practice for the care they had given Jimmy and his family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name the St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, 385 S. Ridge Rd., Greencastle, PA 17225.
