Isabelle (Hollinger) Barnes

November 18, 1921 — December 12, 2013

A. Isabelle Barnes, age 92, formerly of Greencastle, passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Courtland Rehabilitation and Living Center in Ellsworth, Maine with her loving son and daughter by her side. She was born November 18, 1921 in Clay Hill, PA the daughter of the late Howard and Grace (Barnhart) Hollinger. She attended Clay Hill School and graduated in 1939 from Greencastle High School. She was a member of the Clay Hill Union Sunday School and First United Methodist Church of Greencastle, PA. Isabelle was involved in numerous community organizations including Greencastle Senior Women’s Club, Lioness, a Girl Scout leader for many years, Greencastle Sportsman Club Auxiliary and Old Home Week Loyal Daughters.

Her passion was the love for local history which led to her membership in several historical organizations. She was a charter member and served on the board of directors of the Allison-Antrim Museum in Greencastle, charter member of Greencastle Civil War Round Table, member of the Mason Dixon Civil War Round Table of State Line, PA, Kittatinny Historical Society, Chambersburg, PA, and Conococheague Historical Society, Welsh Run, PA. She loved to travel with family and friends, work in her flower gardens, cook, do hand crafts such as crochet, embroidery and needlepoint. She also spent many hours clipping articles of local historical interest for the museum. Isabelle had various occupations in retail, manufacturing, high school cafeteria cook, and was a certified nursing assistant for both nursing home and private duty.

Greencastle was her home until fall of 2008 when she moved to live with her son in Connecticut then in the spring of 2009 she moved to Maine to live near her daughter and son-in-law. She missed all of her family and friends in Greencastle but adjusted well to her new life and location. Living in her lake view apartment, she could watch the eagles fly, and the deer, squirrels and turkeys wander across her lawn. And of course she loved feeding the birds. She enjoyed visiting the ocean in summer and watching the beautiful snow fall in winter. Isabelle is survived by her son, Larry G. Barnes and wife Harriet of East Hartford, CT, and daughter Barbara D. Flaherty and husband Charles of Gouldsboro, ME.
