Irvin L. "Herb" Bitner

Irvin L. "Herb" Bitner, age 88 of 330 Town Dr. Greencastle, PA. died at 7:10 A.M. Sunday January 30, 2011 in the Waynesboro Hospital.

Born January 29, 1923 in Greencastle, PA., he was the son of the late Clarence and Lottie (Beard) Bitner.

He worked for the former Capital Bakers of Chambersburg and retired in 1984 from Grove Worldwide in Shady Grove. Herb was a life member of the Rescue Hose Co. #1 of Greencastle where he volunteered as an apparatus driver for many years. He also was a member of the Franklin County Firemen''s Association and the Cumberland Valley Firemen''s Association. He attended Calvary Bible Church of Greencastle.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He and his first wife Margaret M. (Sweigert) Bitner were married July 22, 1944. She died on August 10, 1994.

He married Betty L. (Barnes) Myers Bitner, who is a resident of Providence Place Chambersburg in 1997.

Surviving family in addition to his wife are one son Roger L. and wife Beverly Bitner, Greencastle, three stepsons Delbert L. Myers and Rodney L. Myers, both of Greencastle, Randy D. Myers, Latrobe, PA. , one stepdaughter, Linda Maynard, Greencastle, two sisters, Jean Acker, Greencastle and Helen Keckler, Providence Place, Chambersburg, two grandsons, five great-grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and a number of step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son Irvin Lynn Bitner in 1948, a grandson Kirk Bitner, two sisters Gladys Bitner and Frances Mellott and a brother Russell Bitner.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday February 3 at 2:00 P.M. from the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home of Greencastle with Pastor Richard Overcash officiating. Burial will be in the Beautiful View Cemetery near State Line . The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6 - 8 P.M.
