Howard Mason Smith, age 88 of 9725 Browns Mill Rd. Greencastle, Pa. died at 11:17 A.M. Tuesday, August 19, 2008 in the Chambersburg Hospital.

Born September 30, 1919 in Chewsville, Maryland, he was the son of the late Mason R. and Sarah Ann (Kuhn) Smith.

Mr. Smith retired from the Western Maryland Railroad in 1981. In his earlier years, he had worked at the Statton Furniture Co. and the former M.P. Moller Pipe Organ Co., both of Hagerstown.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greencastle where he sang on the church choir. Mr. Smith was a member of the National American Legion and bowled in a league at Sunshine Lanes of Waynesboro.
His hobbies and interests included woodworking, where he made clocks and furniture, chair caning and fixing radios and televisions.

He graduated in 1937 from Hagerstown High School. Mr. Smith was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran serving during World War II.

He and his wife, Betty B. (Bryan) Smith were married June 1, 1947 in Greencastle.

Surviving family in addition to his wife of 61 years are:

Three sons, Ronald M. (Husband of Susan) Smith, Harrisburg, Pa., Robert W. (Husband of Dianne) of Chambersburg, Pa. and Gerald L. Smith, Waynesboro, Pa.

One sister, E. Genevieve Tracy, Smithsburg, Md.

Five grandchildren, Mary E. Morgan, Christa M. Smith, Steve L. Smith, Brad M. Smith and Laura N. Smith

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 22 at 11:00 A.M. from the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle with Rev. Stacy Crawford officiating. Burial will be in the Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6 - 8 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in his memory to the First United Methodist Church 45 North Washington St. Greencastle, Pa. 17225.
