Herbert L. Zeger, age 87 of 7748 Browns Mill Rd. Chambersburg, Pa. died at 10:40 P.M. Monday August 4, 2008 in the Shook Home of Chambersburg, Pa.
Born July 8, 1921 in Fort Loudon, Pa., he was the son of the late David S. and Ruth (Neikirk) Zeger.
Mr. Zeger was the owner and operator of Antrim Building and Farm Supply of Greencastle, Pa. for 28 years having retired in 2001. In his earlier years he worked at Fairchild Aircraft of Hagerstown and was comptroller at Frick Co. Waynesboro for many years.
He lived in the local area all his life having graduated in 1940 from Chambersburg High School. Mr. Zeger enrolled at Grove City College in Grove City, Pa. in 1940 and left college in 1942 to join the U.S. Navy. He served as a pilot in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he also trained pilots in a flight school in Corpus Christi Texas. He was discharged in December 17, 1945 from active duty and retired from the Naval Reserves having reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Following the war, he received his bachelor''s degree in 1947 from Grove City College.
Mr. Zeger was a member since 1931 of the First United Methodist Church on Second St. in Chambersburg where he was a member of the Men''s Bible class for 22 years and served as head communion steward for many years.
He was a charter member in 1957 of the Kauffman Ruritan Club. Herbert was a member and past master of the Mt. Pisgah Masonic Lodge #443 of Greencastle and a member of
The Sojourners.
He and his wife, Mary (Small) Zeger were married February 12, 1944 in Marion, Pa. She died on February 14, 2003.
Surviving family are:
Two daughters, Linda Zeger (Spouse David A.) Delahoussaye of Santa Rosa Beach Florida and Elaine Herman of Chambersburg, Pa.
One son, Robert C. (Spouse Lisa Lynn) Zeger of Greencastle, Pa.
One brother, Ernest E. Zeger of Carlisle, Pa. and one sister-in-law, Emily Small McLaughlin of Dresher, Pa.
Three grandchildren, Jeremy T. Herman, Brandon C. Zeger and Morgan E. Zeger, three step-grandchildren, James Delahoussaye, Dasyn Daley and Chessie Ambrose and one step-great-grandson Brady Vetter.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother Fred Zeger.
Funeral services will be held on Friday August 8, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church 225 South Second St. Chambersburg with Rev. John J. Dromazos officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Chambersburg V.F.W. Post #1599 Honor Guard will be in the Browns Mill Cemetery in Kauffman, Pa. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6 - 8 P.M. at the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle, Pa. and at the church one hour before the service on Friday. Memorial contributions may be given in his memory to the First United Methodist Church 225 South Second St. Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.
